It is painted Bright Orange (International Orange) so search teams can find it in a crash site. It’s made of steel and titanium to survive the “Cauldron” of an engine fire. I guess “black box” is just a bit easier to say that “orange box” 😂 or maybe the name is more metaphorical?
It’s called a black box in aviation, but I don’t know why it’s orange instead.
